A Silver Spring man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the February 2023 murder of his wife, according to authorities.

A Montgomery County Circuit Court jury found Dennis Hinnant Jr., 30, guilty in May of second-degree murder for the death of his wife, 28-year-old Taresha Pendarvis. He was sentenced Tuesday by Circuit Court Judge John Maloney, according to a press release from the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office. Hinnant is receiving the maximum sentence for second-degree murder under Maryland state law.

Contact information for Hinnant’s legal representation was not immediately available Wednesday morning.

According to charging documents, Hinnant walked into the Rockville City police station on Feb. 1, 2023, holding a baby, and said he wanted to turn himself in. He provided the couple’s address and said he wanted to talk to a detective about “a homicide that occurred in Silver Spring,” according to charging documents.

Based on the information provided by Hinnant, officers went to an apartment at 8820 Lanier Drive, where they found Pendarvis dead in the bathtub. She had been stabbed multiple times and strangled with a belt, documents state.

Police then arrested Hinnant. During an interview with detectives, he said he and Pendarvis had been arguing about potentially getting divorced before he killed her.
