In 245 years as a state, Maryland has elected 62 governors—none of them a resident of Montgomery County. (Lt. Gov. Blair Lee of Silver Spring was acting governor for a year-and-a-half in the late 1970s, but never elected in his own right.) MoCo’s gubernatorial dry streak could finally end in 2022: Of nine Democrats vying for the party’s nomination in this June’s primary in heavily Democratic Maryland, seven—former nonprofit executive Jon Baron; state Comptroller Peter Franchot; former state Attorney General Doug Gansler; former Obama administration official Ashwani Jain; former Obama Education Secretary John King; former Obama Labor Secretary Tom Perez; and author/activist Jerome Segal—live in Montgomery County. And one more—former anti-poverty foundation CEO Wes Moore—was, like former Gov. Martin O’Malley, originally from Montgomery before adopting Baltimore as his base.
