A construction worker and a firefighter were injured after a gas leak occurred at the former location of Eastham’s Auto Service on Wisconsin Avenue mid-day Tuesday.
Battalion Chief James Resnick said a construction crew was in the process of excavating and capping the gas line at 7100 Wisconsin when the leak began. Fire crews responded around 11 a.m. and found a worker unconscious in an excavation hole. Resnick said firefighters rescuictated the worker at the scene and transported him to the hospital in stable condition. The firefighter who was injured suffered from heat exhaustion and is in stable condition at the hospital, according to Resnick.
Resnick said firefighters worked for about an hour to contain the gas leak. Nearby buildings, including the Crescent Plaza Apartments, were evacuated. Wisconsin Avenue between Woodmont and Bethesda Avenue was closed for about an hour and a half. All buildings and Wisconsin Avenue have since been reopened, said Resnick.
The location of the leak is the planned location of the Solaire Bethesda, a 139-unit apartment building being developed by Washington Property Company.
