There will be a delay in the release of body-worn camera footage from a fatal May 29 officer involved-shooting in Silver Spring, the Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General announced Monday.
After an hours-long barricade in an apartment, a man who has not been identified by police was fatally shot by SWAT officers, according to authorities.
The Office of the Attorney General said footage is usually released “20 business days after the incident,” and that the delay in releasing the video is due to needing additional time to conduct witness interviews, according to a Monday press release.
At about 11:40 p.m. May 29, police responded to a call from a family member about a “person in distress” in an apartment in the 3300 block of Hampton Point Drive, according to a police statement.
A man armed with a gun and his mother were in the apartment, police said. As officers arrived, gunshots were heard, according to the police statement, leading police to initiate an emergency response and call for SWAT to respond.
Meanwhile, the statement said officers began negotiations with the man in the apartment.
Around 2 a.m., officers entered the apartment and SWAT officers “engaged the subject, and he was shot by officers,” the statement said. The man’s mother was not harmed.
Montgomery County Fire and Fescue Service crews transported the man to a local hospital, where he later died.
The Independent Investigations Division has been handling the shooting investigation as required by state law.
“Our office is independent of any police department or law enforcement agency, so having us on scene can ensure that the investigation fair, unbiased and transparent, which is beneficial to both the community and the law enforcement agencies,” Thomas Lester, a spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, told NBC4 at the scene on May 30.
