The National Education Association, the national labor union affiliated with the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA), endorsed Democratic nominee April McClain Delaney on Monday in the 6th Congressional District race.

“While some extreme politicians are focused on banning books and taking away learning opportunities for students, [McClain Delaney] will be a trusted partner for parents and educators to strengthen Maryland’s public schools and ensure students can get the one-on-one support they need, expand school-based mental health programs, keep students and educators safe from gun violence, and address educator shortages,” National Education Association President Becky Pringle said in a press release.

NEA had endorsed Democratic candidate and state Del. Joe Vogel. (D-Dist. 17) prior to the May 14 primary election in which he was defeated by McClain Delaney. McClain Delaney will face Republican nominee and former state Del. Neil Parrott (R-Dist. 2A) in the Nov. 5 election.

“April McClain Delaney has extensive experience working in childhood public advocacy, and is committed to building meaningful partnerships with educators to ensure our education policies lift up and advance Maryland’s public schools,” MSEA President Cheryl Bost said in the same press release.

McClain Delaney, a Potomac resident, resigned in October as deputy assistant secretary for communications and information in the U.S. Commerce Department before announcing her campaign. Prior to joining the Biden administration, she was the Washington, D.C., director of Common Sense Media, an advocacy group that focuses on online safety and the impact of television on children’s health and well-being.

“Investments in public schools are investments in the future of our children and communities. I know the challenges our education systems face, and the importance of public policy that puts the needs of educators and students at the forefront of the discussion,” McClain Delaney said in the press release.
