Yesterday a writing colleague disappointed me with a comment that was made about “housewives.” No, no not the show Desperate Housewives, but the actual group of people called “housewives,” which in itself is a passé term, as most choose to call themselves SAHMs or WAHMs.
I’m All a-Twitter March 27, 2008

Or should that be a twitterbug? I finally got with the program and joined twitter today. I thought that perhaps I was one of the last people on earth to catch the wave, but at Business & Learning’s most-recent Tuesday Night Networking Chat, I found out otherwise. Mary, one of my colleagues at the AW water cooler was also among the untwittered also just joined. (You can read about it here.) This could prove to be a dangerous and fun experience…updating from your moblie? Keeping up with people almost instantaneously? Basically, microblogging as Mary put it in today’s blog post?
I will admit that it took me a bit to get in the groove and navigate around to figure out how exactly to use it. But then again, I did join at nearly two in the morning, so the brain probably wasn’t as sharp as it would have been at a normal time of day for most people. What really was the shocker though was how many people in my address book it it found…holy cats! I was also surprised though that there were people who I was sure would be on twitter that aren’t—or at least not yet. (See? I’m really not the last tech-savvy person to join.) But it was really awesome when Crystal, who was in the same meeting that I was in, posted a welcome note to/about me. Yes, I’m feeling the love.
On a personal note it’s pretty freaking cool that it’s an application that my technogeek husband hasn’t added yet to his arsenal, but I’m sure he’ll be a twitterbug soon too. Now, I just have to actually remember to make updates and make sure that I don’t manage to go over my minutes.

I am dreadfully late with this post. It was just one of those days. You know the kind…where time seems to just completely escape you and the all the forces of the universe seem to conspire against your personal deadlines?
Well, luckily, the winds shifted this evening and tonight’s show was a breeze, but not without help of course. Tonight’s guest was Charles Striklin, a new media professional and co-organizer of this year’s WordCamp Dallas, which takes place in Frisco, Texas (a suburb of Dallas) this weekend March 29 and 30.
Engaging and apt, Charles spoke about the origins of WordCamp, what can be expected at WordCamp Dallas and how WordCamp events are occurring not just in the United States, but worldwide. This little blogger and big fan of WordPress and what the WordPress guys have created is wishing that she could hop on a plane and be there. For those of us who can’t make it, we’ll be able to peek in on all the official action because when you get a bunch of bloggers together for formal and informal gatherings, you know that at least a handful of them will be posting about it.
To find out more about WordCamp, visit www.dallas.wordcamp.org. Registrations are being accepted through Friday. You can also listen to Charles’ WordCamp podcast for more information and details, and of course, you can hear my interview with him from tonight’s Cyber Savvy Show broadcast.

Girls, Make Up and Self Esteem—A Double-edged Sword March 22, 2008

Oh Yeah. It Starts Early
I belong to a few parenting groups—most of them directly relate to being a WAHM, others focus more on parenting specifically. Today, I saw a post at one of them about a young daughter’s self esteem. The question was about trouble with a five-year-old who only thinks she’s beautiful if she’s wearing make-up. Her mother has explained to the daughter that she is beautiful without make-up and that moms wear make-up because they have to in order to look beautiful. Oy. Every feminist fiber in my being wanted to scream at her, “What do you mean that moms wear makeup because we have to in order to look beautiful?” “Why are you buying into to cosmetic industry’s myths?” The post also made me wonder why this five year old was wearing make up to begin with even if it is “only lip gloss and eye shadow” as the distressed mother stated. Only eye shadow? Again, oy. (more…)

A soggy Cheerio (or a handful of them) offered to you. A partially eaten piece of steak (that you don’t realize was chewed until after it’s been shoved into your mouth). A big wet and sticky kiss. A sudden nuzzle out of the blue or a hug that leaves little hand prints as its aftermath.
Gross? Yes—to almost anyone except the parent of a toddler. (more…)

Every Wednesday night from 8:00 to 8:30 p.m. Eastern time, I host the Cyber Savvy show at Passionate Internet Voices Talk Radio (PIVTR). Past guests have included Thursday Bram, Jonathan Bailey of PlagiarismToday.com, Jennifer Gniadecki, networking and marketing maven and author of the new book Non-toxic Networking, due out March 24, 2008. If you haven’t read her blog, Beyond Mom, you should, and to keep abreast of a host of issues around copyright and plagiarism, Jonathan’s blog is not to be missed either. And you can read Thursday’s writings at her main blog and her take on the state of political affairs at One Vote Matters. (more…)
P&E Under Attack March 2, 2008

Predators and Editors (P&E) is being preyed upon. For 11 years, P&E has been protecting unsuspecting writers and other artists from the pitfalls of unscrupulous editors, publishers and agents. P&E also gives rave reviews where they are due and provides a whole host of other resources and information for writers (and other artists). Being a voice of reason and a non-profit advocacy group (for want of a better term) for writers, composers, artists and others has given them their share of commendations and condemnations, and now they are under some serious attack and could use the help and support from the artistic professionals who have come to trust them.
